    Riding via Appia Antica

    P152

We tackled Lonely Planet's only suggested ride from Rome today, down the Appia Antica and a lap around Lake Nemi before heading home via Frascati.
Every part had it's challenge; traffic, hills, getting lost! Via Appia Antica, the ancient Roman road, takes you straight out of Rome from a point not far from the Colosseum, and I mean straight; the ancient Romans liked their roads free of pesky corners. On Sunday's it's closed to cars and becomes the preserve of foot and cycle traffic.
Ridding the cobbled sections is tough going. Riding the rutted flagstones is really the preserve of skilled person with mountain bikes and a shortage of nerve endings in their bums.
More often than not the informal dirt tracks adjacent to the Appian Way were faster and more comfortable on our bicicletta antica.
