I just can't stay away
The flags aren't always flying. My guess is that they're so long that when the wind isn't blowing they drop to the sandy surface where they risk damage from passing turtles.

The bulk of the world's population was down at Cott Main on Sunday night. I quite liked the poles at the north end of the show. I quite liked them again when I went back for my morning swim on Monday and they had flags on them. Haven't put in my people's choice yet but I reckon I'll be voting for the flags, the animal heads on sticks (more fun than it sounds) or the Doric columns made out of string.

Sun, 05 Jul 2009 04:58:00 -0700 Gob smacking amounts of seaweed at Leighton Beach http://robfrith.posterous.com/gob-smacking-amounts-of-seaweed-at-leighton-b http://robfrith.posterous.com/gob-smacking-amounts-of-seaweed-at-leighton-b

At the risk of sounding like an old bugger - I've lived in this neck of the woods for 2 and a half decades and never witnessed this mountainous amount of seaweed washed up in the winter storms. Should start smelling a treat in a few days. Shot with the Olympus 1030 'cause I couldn't locate the wondacam prior to the excursion. Spot of salt from the 1030's last underwater outing is creating the unsightly cloud of flare on the RHS. Have since cleaned lens (and located the wondacam)
